Art By Jessyca Myers: An Interview

One of the best things about being an artist is being inspired by other artists. Today, I am bringing you a very special interview with my long time bestie Jessyca in honor of the launch of her brand new online gallery, Art by Jessyca Myers

Her brand new webstore is simply adorable and you can order anything from commissioned pieces to greeting cards. She has a very unique style of art and is exceptionally talented, self taught and as a full time working mother and wife and part time artist, she is truly conquering it all. She is making quite a name for herself in Nashville, TN where this California girl currently resides with her husband and toddler daughter. She has been debuting all over town at various Art Shows and has been received incredibly well by the local press.

Jessyca is going places so sit back, and get a behind the scenes look at her world of art and may it inspire you to conquer your dreams, too.
Tiny Forest Blog: Summarize your style as an artist?
Jessyca Myers: I am attracted to many different styles of art however I unfortunately have a very short attention span so I tend to paint in a more "pop art" style.  I love bold outlines, bright colors and unexpected backgrounds.

TFB: What is your creative process?
JM: I don't really have any rhyme or reason to what my next painting will be.  Once an idea forms in my head, I get what I call a rush of inspiration where it is all I can think about until I execute it.  I have been known to get excited about an idea, rush to the art store and then start working on it all within a few hours.

TFB: What is your favorite medium to use?
JM: I always use acrylic paints.

TFB: What is it you love about acrylics?
JM: I love the look of oil paints but again, my impatience gets the better of me and I can't stand the drying process.  Acrylics are a lot more forgiving because you can make multiple changes as you go and believe me, it's MULTIPLE changes.

TFB: What is one thing you'd like to paint/create?
JM: I am always drawn to the human faces.  Eyes, lips and hair to be exact.  I would love to some day paint one that I am satisfied with.

TFB: As a busy working mom how to you balance life, motherhood and art?
JM: Being is mom is always number one so my painting time is during my daughter's bedtime and my bedtime (which is often later than it should be.) Nap time on the weekends is also a good time slot to get some painting done.  I cannot wait until my daughter is old enough to join in on the painting!

TFB: How will you know you've made it as an artist?
JM: Well one of my life goals is to own my own business so when I can successful thrive and provide for my family with my business, that's when I will feel successful.  I would ideally like to have a little business that I can pass on to my daughter once I'm too old and cranky to deal with it anymore.

TFB: What are a few things you'd like my readers to know about you?
JM: I have painted for as long as I can remember.  My dream job was to be an animators for Disney back when everything was done by hand and not computer.  The first canvas painting I did was of Mufasa from Lion King, it is still framed in my grandmas house.  Another fun fact, I was given my Great Grandma GG's art supplies when she passed away and I use her paint brushes on every painting.

It's All About Me [Q&A Link Up Party]

Happy Tuesday and welcome to another installment of It's All About Me! I am so happy you stopped by to join The Petite Mrs and I. This week are answering questions about motivation and mental health.

New to the link up? Click here to read the story behind our link-up!

1. How do you stay motivated?
I am a list maker. I make lists for everything, even mundane things that seem pointless to be on a list. The act of prioritizing tasks and crossing them off when there are completed helps me stay motivated.

2. What's your favorite "cheat day" food?
Well I have never dieted, ever in my life, and even though I am skinny I do love food. Some of my favorites to binge on are pizza, burritos and tacos. I also have a slight addiction to cereal!

3. What's one thing you do for your mental health?
Take my meds? Unfortunately for me taking my medication daily is one thing that I do every day for my mental health. I also like to meditate in the morning when I first wake. While I am still in bed, I will take a moment to visualize my day and how I am going to solve any road blocks. I also like to focus on positive things, you can read about how, here

4. How do you relax?
I like to relax by taking a really hot shower or by just straight chillin' on the couch watching a movie.

5. How do you spend your ideal lazy Sunday?
Sleeping in and champagne brunch with my husband. :)

Thank you for stopping by, don't forget to link up below!

Join me tomorrow for an interview with painter Jessyca Myers as she talks all things art and motherhood.

DIY: T-Shirt Cutting Tutorial

I love music. Music has been a major influence in my life since I was 14 and discovered the punk music scene. Music has also been a major influence on my personal style. I like expensive things and I love getting dressed up in my designer dresses and stilettos but on most days you will find me in band t-shirts and jeans.

Almost everyone I know has either been in a touring band or has worked with a touring band at some point, including my husband and myself. Being friends with bands means that I have acquired a massive t-shirt collection. Unfortunately, most bands print on standard shirts in men's sizes which can be fairly unattractive, so I began to cut them up in an effort to make them fit me and my style.

Last week my best friends band, Brick By Brick was in town on tour and they hooked me up with some fresh shirts so grab some scissors and grab and a shirt of your own and follow along with this easy no-sew razor back tee tutorial.

What you will need:
A T-shirt
** PRO TIP: I have found that a shirt a size bigger than what you wear works the best.
Some good scissors

Join me tomorrow at Midnight PST for another installment of the It's All About Me link up party. We'd love for you to join us! Have a great week and happy Monday!

20 things you probably didn't know...

Oh, I probably should have clarified that. 20 things you probably didn't know about me! If you are a regular around here, then you know that I absolutely love getting to know my readers and for my readers to connect with me. Since things have been sort of serious around these parts I thought it would be kind of fun and light-hearted to give you 20 facts about me!
  1. I am left-handed.
  2. I was a vegetarian for almost 10 years, but started eating meat to relieve my anxiety disorder.
  3. I could never go vegan because I couldn't give up cheese, but I love animals and support animal rights.
  4. I drive a Prius, which makes me feel like I am a better person.
  5. I am a total Apple/Mac snob. I can't help it; I'm a graphic designer.
  6. My husband and I got married in all black and my wedding rings are sapphires because I think diamonds are boring.
  7. My husband and I met at a music video shoot for our mutual friends' band (psst... they are playing Warped Tour this year.)
  8. I am addicted to Coca-Cola, and I prefer soda to coffee, but I will still drown myself in coffee if necessary!
  9. I haven't named any of my pets. Since they've all been rescues, I kept their names. Which is probably a good thing because Buddy would have ended up being Prince Happy Fluffy-Butt Holt!
  10. I am really bad at math and I still use my fingers. Thanks mediocre public school!
  11. I change my hair color once every few weeks. I'm currently in a green phase.
  12. I've watched the entire series of "LOST" at least 6 times. Every time I watch it, the story makes a little more sense. I also think it was one of the best TV shows ever made, second only to the almighty "Breaking Bad."
  13. Speaking of "Breaking Bad," I binge-watched the entire series in 5 days.
  14. I'm addicted to bad reality TV, and I want to be famous only to go on "Watch What Happens Live!"
  15. I don't listen to music when I drive; the radio is either off or on AM talk radio.
  16. I love to read, and my favorite book was Pearl S. Buck's "The Good Earth," until I read James Frey's "Bright Shiny Morning." I have read it cover-to-cover 6 times.
  17. I love baseball and usually know more stats and watch more games than most of my guy friends. Go A's!! ;)
  18. My husband surprised me once with the MLB Network and it was one of the best presents I have ever received. (I watched almost every single game that season!!)
  19. I desperately want to buy a house because I've never felt settled in my adult life. I have moved 21 times since leaving the nest.
  20. I found it pretty hard to come up with 20 random things about myself.

I would love to know some random facts about you; leave a few the comments!

Love Thyself

I follow a great blogger who pens Be A Warrior Queen, she is super inspiring and one of the sweetest people I have been fortunate enough to meet through blogging. She shares a lot about self love and acceptance, and while binging on her blog, I started thinking about how I perceive myself.

If you follow along regularly, you know that I suffer from bipolar disorder. I'd like to think that I am the "same ol' me," but the truth is my disorder has changed me. If I am being honest with myself sometimes I struggle with that, but most of all I struggle with who I am with this disorder.

Most people don't really understand what being bipolar is, they just know that it's a mental illness and people with mental illnesses are crazy. Yes, I guess if you had to put a label on it I would be crazy but the majority of my illness is not manifested in crazy outburst (although they do happen), but with extreme depressive episodes where I can't cope with life. That in and of itself is hard but the worst part is what it does to my self esteem.

I look around at other people and say to myself, "why can't I just feel normal?" "Why do I have to feel this way?" Or "why was I given this baggage?" And the answer to that is who the f**k knows, but it is what it is. We all have our crosses to bear; we all have that something that makes us feel inadequate or less than human.

On most days I'm good. I take my medications and I go to work, I walk the dog, I cook dinner. Somedays I'm sad and somedays I am total f**king mess. Some days I scream and cry, and punch walls and pull my hair out... because I am bipolar, no, because I am me. Sometimes we are given things in life to carry, and its up to us decide if they are going to weight us down.

It's All About Me

What was in your Easter basket this year?
I guess I was a bad girl this year because the easter bunny didn't bring me any goodies but I bought Buddy some rabbit links (which he goes totally ape shit over) and I got my husband some new salad bowls.

How do you celebrate Easter?
Easter is just another day to get brunch!

If you could go anywhere for spring break where would it be?
I'm a beach bunny so some place tropical... like Key West, FL or Costa Rica would be nice.

Whats the weather like where you are right now?
Its been warm and windy... gotta love that California weather.

What's one goal you have for April?
